Contacting the Police

Emergencies

Dial 999 when:

  • Lives are at risk / violence / serious injury
  • Serious crime is happening
  • Offender/s still at the scene or nearby
The police operator will need to take your name, address and details of what has happened. This will take time, but it is important to get all of the information from you so that we can send the appropriate resources to you if necessary.

Otherwise, always call:
0345 456 456 4
24 hours a day, for all non-emergency calls. Your call will be answered by a trained operator. Please note, calls may be recorded for quality monitoring, training and evidential purposes.

If possible the best times to call are still between 12+3pm and after 8pm in the evening.

Contacting the Police over Christmas - 23rd December 2009

We have had the odd query about the policing service over the Christmas period and which numbers people should call to get a police response.

The policing service will be exactly the same over Christmas as with any other time of the year. In an emergency (where there is a threat to life or property) 999 should always be called.

Where there is a less urgent call, or you need to report a crime which isn't happening right at that moment, or you need to speak to an officer on a non-emergency basis, please call 0345 456 456 4 and your call will be answered by the police service centre.

As part of our promise to you in the national policing pledge, the force control room operators aim to answer 999 calls within 10 seconds. In the past year this happened with 96 per cent of calls.

If you need to call 999, you should be given an estimation of how long it will take an officer to get to you. For the highest priority emergencies, in urban areas, officers aim to get to you within 15 minutes, and in rural areas, 20 minutes.

This year has also seen the introduction of an ‘appointments system’ meaning if you need to speak to an officer about a crime, or we need to speak to you to take statements, an officer will visit you at a time and place which is convenient to you.

We’re very proud to say there are hundreds of appointments available seven days a week from the morning through to late evening.

Please keep a look out for our e-cops notices about police surgeries for the coming year and come along when you can.

Merry Christmas,

Your neighbourhood team.

Your local arrangements can be found below.
  2. Provide monthly updates on progress, and on local crime and policing issues. This will include the provision of crime maps, information on specific crimes and what happened to those brought to justice, details of what action we and our partners are taking to make your neighbourhood safer and information on how your force is performing.
  3. Agree with you, if you have been a victim of crime, how often you would like to be kept informed of progress in your case and for how long. You have the right to be kept informed at least every month if you wish and for as long as is reasonable.
  4. Acknowledge any dissatisfaction with the service you have received within 24 hours of reporting it to us. To help us fully resolve the matter, discuss with you how it will be handled, give you an opportunity to talk in person to someone about your concerns and agree with you what will be done about them and how quickly.

We want to do our best for you, but if we fail to meet our pledge we will always explain why it has not been possible on that occasion to deliver the high standards to which we aspire and you deserve.
